Mercury Mosaics recently released Mid Mod Squares. This is the Minneapolis-based handmade tile company’s newest (and perhaps most nostalgic!) tile pattern yet. Geometric and colorful, unique yet sophisticated, vintage yet fresh, the midcentury-inspired design ($69 per square foot) is comprised of small semicircles, mini subway tiles, and classic squares. Masu.
What’s so special about it? Kristen Torres-Corman, his creative director at Mercury Mosaic, explains how he systematically arranges his Accent tiles to create “tosses” or random surface patterns. Rotating and repeating the sheet leaves you with a “custom, organic, non-linear design – a design that no one else has,” she says.
“[It] It reminds me of a time when my parents were art school graduates, when being a professional artist was not considered a sensible path,” adds founder and CEO Mercedes Austin. “They brought a midcentury modern flair to a completely different architectural home, and it worked. … For me, patterns inspired by midcentury design are a nod to where I come from. It evokes a sense of wonder and inspiration.”
