MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. – According to Google, modern farmhouse is the most popular interior design style in the United States, topping searches in 33 states.
The analysis was done by Ruby Home, a real estate firm based in Encino, California. Google Trend data using over 550 search terms related to 25 interior design styles reveals the most popular styles in each state.
Although some industry trend experts believe this look is on the decline, the modern farmhouse, a blend of classic and contemporary styles, is popular in 33 states. Next to modern farmhouse, the most popular styles include rustic and coastal, each of which was a top choice in five states. Meanwhile, Mediterranean, Southwestern, Industrial, Victorian, and Eclectic were each cited as popular styles in one state.
Modern Farmhouse receives an average of more than 110,000 searches per month, representing one in eight design searches in the United States.
“When you look at regional differences, it appears that the state’s history, geography and climate still play a major role, rather than seasonal trends,” said Tony Mariotti, a real estate agent with Ruby Homes. “Regardless of your preferred style, everything is characterized by natural features in some way, whether it’s colour, material or pattern, proving how important it is for interiors to remain connected to their surroundings. .”
Rustic style is of secondary importance as it uses elements inspired by the natural beauty of Mother Nature. Designers often say this is desirable because it evokes warmth and comfort and is a versatile and realistic design choice due to its hassle-free approach. Rustic design features strong, organic materials and charming simplicity. Over 64,000 rustic designs are searched every month in the US.
Coastal style comes in at number three. This style was also at the top of searches in his five states: California, Delaware, Georgia, Florida, and South Carolina. Inspired by beach life, coastal design uses the colors of sea, sand and sky, and incorporates marine themes, natural materials and patterns.
In a surprising pick, Feng Shui style topped the list in two states on opposite ends of the country: Massachusetts and Hawaii. Feng Shui is not so much an interior style as it is a design philosophy that aims to create a harmonious and balanced space that brings positive energy and good luck.
The Southwestern style is popular in New Mexico, perhaps influenced by indigenous culture and Spanish colonial history. Mariotti says it’s reminiscent of warm, earthy tones, rustic woods, tiles and textiles.
