A TikToker’s decision to paint a leather chair a bright color has garnered millions of views.
Thousands of comments had very mixed reactions to this internal hack.
Some felt the TikToker ruined the chair, while others thought the critics were too harsh.
A woman has sparked a firestorm online after sharing a controversial interior design hack that involves painting a leather chair to change its color.
On July 6, a TikToker named @yeli.heidecker posted a video of himself rolling what appeared to be cream-colored paint on a brown leather chair. Text on the screen said she tried to explain to her husband that the “old” furniture was disfiguring and needed to be “renovated and painted.” The caption included the hashtags #homeimprovement and #budgethomedecor.
The upload received over 7.8 million views and 3,300 comments from people who were shocked and confused by what they had just seen, and were overwhelmed by how she had ruined what they felt was good furniture. There seemed to be a unanimous agreement. Popular comments included some joking that she deserved prison time for this idea, and others suggesting the whole thing was a comedy skit.
A follow-up video, posted the same day and racking up an additional 669,000 views, shows the TikToker crouching in front of a fully painted chair, raising the question of whether it’s even possible to paint leather. She was directly responding to the comments made.
In the upload, she briefly showed off the paint she used, Acrylic Leather Paint Satin Finisher from paint brand Angelus, and said she prepared the chair by first cleaning and deglazing it. According to her website Leatherek, which aims to educate readers about leather, this is to restore the material’s natural oils.
“Sometimes you don’t have the money to buy a new sofa for $5,000, so this is what we’re working on right now,” the TikToker added, revealing that he had originally intended to ditch the armchair, but was testing it out. We used this method instead, painted the chair white, then changed her mind and repainted it tan.
In two more updates, each racking up more than 450,000 views, the TikToker detailed the process of painting and responded to various comments that suggested he had made the wrong choice. At the end of the day, she said, “This is my chair.”
Some viewers defended the TikToker, writing that people were being unnecessarily harsh towards furniture that wasn’t even theirs. “Some of the comments are too aggressive over chairs,” one viewer wrote, receiving 800 likes.
On July 9, the TikToker posted an updated look at giving the chair its third and final coat of tan paint. She displayed on-screen comments from viewers criticizing the project, asking, “Have you just come back from exile?” and saying in a voiceover that she doesn’t understand why people are “so rude.” “attack.”
The post received 265 comments, and while some went on to criticize the paint job, many more appreciated the finished look and praised the TikToker’s accomplishment, saying that painting leather is possible. He seemed grateful for letting me know.
TikToker @yeli.heidecker has more than 64,400 followers and typically posts videos about tidying up the house.
This isn’t the first time a homemade painting project has caused a stir on TikTok.
Back in March, a TikToker dyed his carpet black using $24 paint and it received over 2 million views. That same month, another TikToker faced huge backlash when she used an antique picture frame to make her fridge more “atmospheric.”
