MILLERS FALLS — Cindy Beyer was cleaning out a barn in Greenfield when she noticed something odd. The old one she placed on her curb not only immediately disappeared, but reappeared in a local reseller’s online store.
So she started selling it herself out of a barn. Over the past five years, her store Rustic Romance has grown into a vintage furniture store with customers from all over New England. Last week, Rustic Romance reopened at Miller’s 26 East Main Street in Falls with amenities such as winter heating and convenient parking.
When Beyer first started working at the Greenfield barn, all of the items she sold were hand-selected by her. She sold in her warehouse and went on picking trips throughout the Northeast and Midwest. She also developed relationships with local artisans and searched for products online from international sellers.
“I look for pieces that speak to me and tug at my heartstrings in some way,” Bayer explained. “We want this store to have a look, feel and products you won’t find anywhere else.”
Now, with stores getting busier, Bayer also has “pickers” trawling the Northeast. Sometimes it will tell you to find some kind of item, and sometimes it will still surprise you. Last week, pickers in New Hampshire cleaned out an old factory full of Victrola record players.
“You never know what’s out there,” Beyer says. “And people have barns full of stuff everywhere.”
Beyer said the store’s name reflects the style that has developed since the first barn sale. There are basic “rustic” elements like farmhouse furniture and ladders, but also decorations and themes that change seasonally. Currently, vintage Christmas decorations line part of the store.
Because of how Beyer uses social media to market its stores, Rustic Romance is known not only locally but also as far away as Boston, New York and Connecticut, she said.
She says she knows that most of her customers are women and they usually want a unique look. They may have a particular style in mind or want a unique piece.
“They’re looking for something that sets them apart from everyone else,” Beyer said.
