Tesla has begun selling a cardboard flat-pack cat house in China with an angular silhouette modeled after the car brand’s controversial electric pickup truck.
According to the product description on Tesla’s Chinese website, the Cat House’s design was “inspired by the futuristic shape of the Cybertruck.”
“The semi-open cat house with embedded thick cardboard meets the cat’s nature and daily needs,” the brand continued.
Customers must assemble the house themselves using sheets of thick moisture-proof cardboard to form the frame and the scratchboard integrated in the center.
According to the website, the house can withstand up to 7.5 kilograms of weight.
Its design is an homage to one of Tesla’s most controversial products, the Cybertruck, which founder Elon Musk first unveiled in November 2019.
Designed to look like a cross between a pickup truck and a stealth fighter jet, the bulletproof electric car has divided opinion online, with some calling it “ridiculous” and others praising its “daring”. .
The Cybertruck Cat House is the latest product released under Tesla Life, a collection of lifestyle products for the Chinese market, ranging from drinkware and outdoor sports accessories to pet supplies and apparel.
Other products launched alongside the Cat House include skateboards, drip coffee makers, and Frisbees. These are all popular lifestyle items among young Chinese consumers, the brand’s main demographic in China.
The average Tesla driver in this country is about 30 years old. And in 2021, Tesla was named the most popular car brand among consumers within five years of graduating from college, with a 95 percent approval rating among this demographic, according to a survey by automotive think tank Yiche.
This isn’t the first time Tesla has released an unusual product. The company launched its own brand of tequila in a lightning bolt-shaped bottle in 2020, after Musk pitched the idea as an April Fool’s joke.
Later, Tesla also released a limited edition glass set with a metal stand, inspired by the shape of the Tesla tequila bottle with its angular outline and engraved Tesla logo.
