FLORIDA – Joanne Elaine Robbins, 80, of Melbourne, Florida, passed away on September 6, 2023, surrounded by her daughter.
Joan was born December 31, 1942 in Gloversville, NY to the late Louis and Helen Schermbauer and graduated from Gloversville High School in 1960. She lived in Gloversville from her birth until 1969 when her family moved to Meco, NY.
Growing up, Joan was always involved in all kinds of activities. She grew up bowling at the Lanes at Sunset in Gloversville, where she was an avid bowler until 2010 and was inducted into the Fulton County Bowling Hall of Fame. I did. Joan also had a newspaper delivery route delivering the Leader-Herald on back roads throughout Fulton County. As if she didn’t have enough time, she drove school buses in the mornings, afternoons, and whenever extra drivers were needed at sporting events.
In 1972, Joanne and her husband started a kitchen and bathroom remodeling business. Joan then took it over and she ran it herself. In 1982, Joan took a job in the Kitchen Cabinetry business in Florida and moved to Bay of Palms, Florida with her daughter Beth. It didn’t take long for her to decide that she didn’t want to work for someone else. In 1984 she started “Kitchen Designs by Her Joan”. She started a custom kitchen cabinet business in her one-car garage. Eventually she moved into her 20,000 square foot store and built a showroom in Melbourne, Florida. She often said that her greatest accomplishment in the cabinet business was that her company manufactured and installed cabinets in the astronaut crew quarters at Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida. . Joanne’s brother Frank, who passed away in 2012, was a big part of her life, helping her run Joanne’s business.
Joan loved cats and dogs, and sometimes even stray animals, like two baby skunks (named Daffy and Petunia) that were found a few days old. Sometimes raccoons and opossums would invade her home.
Joan is survived by her children and their families. She is survived by her daughter Beth Robbins Gamble, her husband Clark, granddaughter Chelsea, grandson Zachary, and great-granddaughter Aubrey of Seminole, Florida; son Lance Robbins, wife Cheryl, grandchildren Zachry and Dylan, and great-granddaughter Peyton of Katy, Texas; She is also survived by her brother, John Schermbauer and his wife, Pat, of Saratoga Springs, NY;
There are many others who were considered her second children and extended family, too many to mention. Joan loved, was loved and will be missed.
