I watched enough HGTV to record an episode. Go ahead and bring interior design savvy into your home. Mariela Cruzado, owner of Splendor Styling, a Washington, D.C.-based decorating company, says it’s not as difficult as it sounds.
“It’s very approachable. The design is approachable. It’s right there. Now we have the Internet,” Cruzado says.
Whether you own or rent, Cruzado says there are four easy ways to give your place a timeless feel.
Although we spend a lot of time on social media, Cruzado says don’t get too hung up on how picture-perfect your space is. It’s comfortable and should work well for you.
“It’s like the energy you start your day with determines the rest of your life and the rest of your life,” she says.
Mariela Cruzado used these very tips to completely transform her D.C. home. Check out the dramatic before and after photos below.
1. Create a bold space
“Most people are afraid to go and draw everything, and I understand that. It’s a big leap,” Cruzado says.
She recommends highlighting every corner of your home instead of hiding it.
“For example, using wallpaper or special paint in your entryway creates a separate space. You can create the illusion of three rooms when you actually have an open floor plan. I put it away,” she says.
2. Add meaningful artwork
If you find a piece you like, please buy it. I’m sure you’ll find the place. Cruzado recommends grouping pieces together to give it a more gallery-like feel.
3. Set the mood with statement lighting
Lighting fixtures are the jewelry of your home and add charm.
“Walking into a home makes a bold statement. It’s the first thing you see, and it’s like making a room; you want to be there,” Cruzado says.
4. Define your space with area rugs
Divide and conquer with a room-defining rug. The bigger the better. The key is to make sure the front legs of the sofa are on top of the rug.
Rugs make open-concept spaces feel larger, creating more defined zones to hang out, work, and eat.
